Delighted by the Unexpected
I am a painter and photographer living and working in Brooklyn, New York. I graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1972 with a BFA in Visual Communication. For the past 35 years I have worked for Columbia University and New York University as a graphic designer, at first, and rose to creative director and director of marketing publications and digital. I have continued to work on my personal art—paintings, drawing, and photography. My paintings and photographs have been viewed in group shows and galleries.
My most recent photography consists of abstractions and compositions—forms. textures, and colors—but to balance those poetic images, I have worked on a series of performance portraits that you see on this website. All were photographed in existing lighting conditions and with minimal photoshop retouching. I've learned a lot from these wonderful performers—the art of the gesture, a sense of the comedic, and also the idea of pushing the creative envelope. It brings me back to my early days in New York, the times of Charles Ludlam, Bloolips, Ethyl Eichelberger. But through their performances I've also learned how important timing is...it's just a click of the shutter during a special moment when the art of gesture and and facial emotions converge.
So now, I am officially retired (which only means that I am free to pursue my art full-time), and I am seeking venues for exhibitions and support from fellowships and residencies. I am also seeking to broaden my experience in all the performing arts, especially theater and dance. Got a rehearsal coming up?....call me!
